Government plans to improve energy efficiency

News at Howard Independent Estate Agents | 13/10/2020

On 30 September 2020, the UK Government began the consultation process on their plans to improve energy efficiency in the UK rental sector, with a view to all rental properties having a minimum energy efficiency rating (EER) of Band C by 2030*.

More details of the proposal can be found here:

You will see from the link this is very much at the initial consultation stage, with our regulator ARLA urging the government to be more realistic in their expectations.

However we feel it is important for landlords to be aware now, particularly if your property has a low energy efficiency rating.  This will allow you time to investigate the energy efficiency improvements that may be required, check your eligibility for grants, and apply for those grants in good time.

Grants for improvements are available now and details are below.  It is worth noting if you are eligible for the Green Homes Grant then you must redeem the voucher and ensure improvements are completed by 31 March 2021.

The Green Homes Grant Scheme

This Government run scheme allows landlords and homeowners to apply for a grant of up to £10,000 towards the cost of making homes more energy efficient.

More details and how to apply can be found here:

(*by 2030, so a phased approach starting 2025 is proposed.  The minimum EER standard is currently band E- should you wish to check your property’s rating click here ).
We understand the onsultation period ends 30 December 2020
